Whether you call it a business decision, or a moral one, it needs to be based upon facts and not feelings. Unfortunately, it's precisely the facts that are missing, or ambiguous.

As one interested in wine making, I found a bit done on the History Chanel (not exactly a den of conservativism) that in passing discussed wine making in England to be highly enlightening. The 'climate change' was so extreme for around 60 years that the French Govt. proposed legislation to ban importation of English wine. The warming passed, and with it Brittish Bubbly.

Another interesting tidbit was inadvertently nestled into a piece about the bubonic plague. Seems there'd been a warming trend and that has been identified as a possible contributor to the spread the rats and fleas into previously inhospitable western Europe.

In both cases, we have facts. Neither were presented as supporting the arguments of 'climate change deniers'. They were burried within shows having nothing to do with climate change.

There's a very strong argument to be made that it's immoral to squander limited resources on a theory projecting changes some indefinite distance in the future when those same resources could be doing 'good' in the present.

Bill,

You had me . . . all the way until the last sentence.

Teachers' unions are beneficiaries of State-enforced monopolies, for sure. However, instead of the point I think you were going for - get rid of the State-enforced monopoly, I believe you actually made the point that the monopoly may be OK (or at least somewhat unavoidable) but is just incompatible with unionized labor.

FWIW, I support getting rid of both. The monopoly: bring on the Charter Schools, Vouchers and other forms of competition; and the unions: Teachers are professionals, not interchangeable factory workers.

In the event a proportional representation system is necessary, Markus Schulze (of the Schulze Method) also created Schulze STV. It's significantly more complicated to implement, but has many advantages over traditional STV (which is based off of IRV).

Condorcet methods are a decent step above plurality voting and I believe is a feasible goal. Still, it's worth considering proportional representation as well. There's even a multi-winner extension to the Schulze Method: Schulze STV.

Implementation: http://github.com/bradbeattie/Election-Web-Service/blob/master/schulze_stv.py
Demo: http://modernballots.com/zombies/vote

Altho there may be a lot of ties that bind an ultra-conservative to a prog (fiscal, enviro, religious,etc..) there is very little of substance they have in common related to the big picture; which is the evolution of capitalism into hyper-consumerism and the toll over-production has taken on the labor force.

I suggest you check out "A really inconvenient truth" by Joel Kovel.
He lectured at Bard, ran against Nader in 2000, and is (loosely) associated to Peter Schuman of Bread-n-Puppet fame.
Now, you may assert that Marxism has nothing to do with Progs or Conservatives;
but i'd assert that political labels are trumped by the pressing issues they address.

I believe there is a bridge that can link these two groups, but the cons have to re-examine their unbridled support of the Establishment before the can meet half way.

To all Congress Memmbers:

Please DO NOT vote for cap and trade on Friday. This will ruin our country. We can not afford this. Our lives will definitely change for the worse even more. This is so wrong and not what this country needs or wants. We implore you not to vote for this.
Please stand behind the people of NH and the country. Thank you.
